Software, Technology, Guitars and Music

About

I’ve been in software development, consulting and company management since 1979.  My latest project is pCapacity, a tool for software development managers to do ready reckoning on long range development capacity planning for projects – a key element in building product roadmaps and project portfolios that have are achievable, and that the business can align around.

I’ve most recently been VP of Technology Development for Accero, a significant player in the large enterprise payroll/HRMS space, and prior to that was VP Engineering for Earth Class Mail, an ambitious startup with attitude and its sights set on digitizing and revolutionizing the postal industry.   I’m based out of Portland, OR area in the US.  My personal brand is all about building and growing software development teams for high growth and agile companies. I’ve been a three times award winner by CIO Magazine, recognized for agility, technology in support of business risk/reward, and technology innovation.  I consider myself very fortunate that my income is based on something I’m passionate about.  My linkedin profile is accessible below if you’d like to review more.

Guitarist: my other passion. I’ve been playing since 1975, and while it’s for fun now, I’m in a local band, Prime Number , with ambitions on being legends in our lunch hour. We play dance covers for weddings, corporate events, parties, and the usual bars and clubs scenes with our own music. One day…

So this blog may have anything from guitar freak comments, my thoughts or news on things I’ve discovered on software and management, or perhaps anything else that comes along. Of course, links to my favorite bands, software tools, and other life essentials might be littered around too.

    Hello Paul,

I read your articles on “How not to sell to me”. Interestingly I always felt the same way. But why have you stopped writing more? Or may be I have not been able to find the right web pages.

Please guide me through if possible.

I have been in Software Technology from the last 8 years and now the “calling” is to “create distinct value” and work for myself.
Few lines of inspiration and advise would be very helpful.

    Thank you
    Ranjit

Hi Ranjit – you are absolutely on the button when you say the calling is to create distinct value. I couldn’t agree more. I haven’t written much more simply because of time and priorities. I’ve been involved with several startup and high growth firms over the last few years, and they have a tendency to suck every ounce of energy you have. Now though, I’ve focused in again on something I think many people seem to have forgotten… one software developer with a good idea and a reasonable (if not brilliant) way to publicize it, can actually create a distinct value. I’m my own proof! http://pcapacity.com and http://bcviewer.com are both downloading with next to no traditional marketing. And I have more disruptive product ideas to come. Not all will work I’m sure, but it’s certainly much more fun working for me instead of building someone else’s equity. The other thing that strikes me is that intelligent market aware software developers don’t need massive funding to get an idea off the ground. It can be bootstrapped today, just like we used to do it 25 years ago. So Ranjit… dust off your coding pad… get a good idea… bounce it off a few trusted friends, and then build it! Just do it. You’ll be amazed what you can achieve.
